Meet Dr Y.N Mthembu
Dr Nomcebo Mthembu is a dynamic and multi-talented woman, having begun her career in Accounting, before studying medicine. She studied her BSc Degree in Biochemistry & Microbiology at Wits University. She furthered her studies at the Medical University of SA, completed MBChB degree in 2002. Post graduated in Aesthetics, She went on to work at various Health Facilities within both the public and the private sector including King Edward Hospital, Saint Mary’s Hospital, Nu Shifa Hospital, Durdoc Hospital, City Hospital as well as Life Hospital Group Hillcrest. In 2007 she joined a Private Practise at Medicross Group and worked as a General Practitioner until 2016. In 2017 she opened a wellness & lifestyle centre (Medilution) that focuses on combining Western and traditional medical knowledge for an alternative and holistic approach to healing of patients including lifestyle and business couching.
Throughout her career, Dr Mthembu has used her spare time to champion the cause of the vulnerable, especially women and children, volunteering for various organizations including as a Volunteer Teacher at Soweto and as a Volunteer Blind Tape Reader at Wits University for BA students. This commitment to uplifting and caring for the less fortunate eventually led to the birth of Indoni, a youth empowerment organization founded by Dr Mthembu, championing the development of young people through arts and culture, promoting moral regeneration, promoting the appreciation of cultural diversity, promoting social cohesion among the various cultural groups of South Africa and advocating pride for one’s heritage among young people. The project helps young people develop strategies and approaches that will arm them in avoiding and dealing with the effects of the social ills facing our society today.
As a result she is deeply rooted in and always advocates cultural awareness and the appreciation, conservation and mainstreaming of Indigenous Knowledge Systems as part of the tools that can be used to address some of the problems faced by our society today. This knowledge forms the basis for the Indoni Youth Empowerment modules and is therefore passed on to young people a part of the initiatives aimed at providing young people with knowledge that is crucial for them in addressing day to day issues and in assisting their peers. Dr Mthembu has also received numerous awards and has been invited to speak at various seminars and forums on issues ranging from medicine to youth development, traditional leadership, women empowerment, behaviour and culture. Dr Mthembu has also been extensively involved in establishing the efficacy of various herbal medicine mixtures. Recently, she has initiated a research Institute on African Heritage, Medicine & Genealogy.
She currently works as a medical doctor and for the Non- Government Organization (Indoni SA) daily and still finds time to be on weekly KZN radio show (Igagasi FM), where she educates the public on health, family and lifestyle matters.
